Final examinations of the even semesters of Faculty of Engineering, Purbanchal University (PU), at Khwopa Engineering College (KhEC) center have been conducted successfully. According to Er. Sujan Maka, Principal of the college and Superintendent of the center, "Even semester examinations were conducted in the KhEC examination center from Chaitra 23, 2077 to Shrawan 10, 2078 in the physical presence of the students. The center adopted all the measures to control the spread of COVID-19 as per the standards and guidelines provided by Purbanchal University, the District Administration Office, Bhaktapur, and the Government of Nepal. Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, KhEC conducted all examinations fairly."
To ensure the fair examination, PU appointed Prof. Dr. Raju Bhai Tyata, Khwopa College of Engineering, and Dr. Taranath Sharma Ghimire, RR Campus, Kathmandu as observers for the KhEC examination center. A total of 38 students were expelled from the examination for violating disciplinary action during the examination. Impressed by the management at KhEC, Dr. Ghimire said, "I am overwhelmed with the examination system at Khwopa. Adequate physical infrastructure, disciplined invigilators, dedicated staff, quiet ambiance, and strict implementation of rules and regulations made the environment suitable for the examination. This is what actually makes Khwopa exemplary!"
According to KhEC exam section, a total of 11,469 students from two programs, civil and electrical engineering, of four affiliated colleges were scheduled at the KhEC examination center. In 25 days of examination, only 7,152 (62.36%) students appeared at the KhEC center. Along with a superintendent, two observers, two deputy superintendents, 58 invigilators, 24 administrative staff, and 12 policemen were involved in the examination at the center.
Examinees at the KhEC center were impressed with the overall management of the examination. One of the students appearing for the exams shared his dismay with PU about the examination. He said, - "Initially, office of examination management, PU, scheduled the examination from Chaitra 03, 2078. PU postponed the scheduled exam due to protests by the students union, sister organization of governing political parties. The examination only began from Chaitra 23, 2077. Due to the second wave of COVID-19 pandemic in Nepal, many districts including Kathmandu valley exercised strict lockdown. The exams were postponed for the indefinite future. The examination schedule was halted for a few months due to the COVID-19 pandemic. To resume the examination, PU published a notice and examination schedule from Ashad 31, 2078. Again, PU postponed the examination with a new schedule starting from Shrawan 10, 2078."
Another student expressed, "I faced mental stress due to such uncertainties about the examination schedule. I was unable to concentrate and lost focus on my study. Many of my friends suffer through a similar situation."
Hence, Office of Examination Management, Biratnagar, and concerned authorities at PU must take the issue seriously so that students might not have to face such a scenario again in the future.
